In this context, Jan Koum, who is the owner of Whatsapp said, “Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible.”

But now, the company clarified that WhatsApp will be sharing user data with the parent company Facebook.

This is for the purpose of selling more advertisements. WhatsApp has introduced some changes to its privacy policy in the updated version.

If the user accepts those Terms & Conditions, then his/her WhatsApp and Facebook accounts get interlinked. User data such as account details, phone contacts will be shared with his/her Facebook friends, and also phone contacts of his/her friends will be suggested.

However, there is no need to worry about the personal chats, group chats, media files as they are end-to-end encrypted i.e even the company cannot read the messages.

By this move of the company sharing the limited amount of user data between these two social media accounts, most of the users are worrying about their privacy.

Though Facebook Messenger also shares this user data, all the users think that WhatsApp will be more privacy-conscious.

But that was then. It is different now.

The company says that they share the data for the purposes of improving infrastructure and delivery systems, understanding how our services or theirs are used, securing systems, and fighting spam, abuse, or infringement activities.

So, there is no possible way to opt totally out.

The only solution is to stop using What’s App which is the most tougher task.  of course, you can be partially out.

How to Stop Sharing What’s App Data with Facebook

In a blog post, there are two ways to opt-out of sharing the user data information between the two social media accounts.

Option 1:

  • Tap read before you tap agree to accept the updated  terms and conditions of the new privacy policy.
  • You will see a control at the bottom of the screen. If you do not want your account information shared with Facebook to improve your Facebook ads and products experiences, you can uncheck the box or toggle the control.

Option 2:

After agreeing to the new policy, you may have 30 days time to make this choice.

  • Go to –> Settings > Accounts > Share my account info in the app.
