In the rapidly changing and volatile business era we are living in currently if there is one area of business where career opportunities will continue to flourish, it’s the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field. For one, the STEM sector consists of four different (albeit related) branches of study and jobs.

For another, the STEM sector is one of the areas that have the most investment and research going on. People will always need a doctor, and manufacturing and other key areas of the industry will always need engineers, mathematicians, scientists, and technology specialists. Jobs in the STEM field are therefore very attractive and also pay well.

However, youngsters and students can often be unsure of exactly what kind of jobs constitute STEM jobs. So, here’s a look at 11 exciting and well-paying jobs and career opportunities in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and the skills and qualifications needed for them. Take a close look at each to see if you gravitate towards any one or more of these.

CTO/CDO

The chief technology officer (CTO) needs to have the expertise and a thorough grasp of technology affecting the business at the level of strategy-making. Similarly, the chief data officer (CDO) needs to have expert-level knowledge of IT, analytics, and big data.

Both posts need excellent critical thinking and an aptitude for analytics, technology, and logic. The most common degrees include a technology-based bachelor’s degree with a master’s in business administration or master’s in business analytics from reputed universities such as Aston University. You also often need a lot of experience working with technology and data to get prestigious jobs such as the CTO or CDO.

Technical Writer

Technical writers are often engineers with an aptitude for writing, but they can also be journalism or communications/English literature majors with a certification or interest and aptitude for tech.

You need to be able to understand the complex product and technical manuals, and also help write them. Being a technical writer can also involve reading and writing journal articles, design documents, and manufacturers’ manuals.

Accountant

To become an accountant, you need to have a head for numbers, be good at maths, and in general, be good with money. Accountants help individuals and businesses organize their financial information. Job requirements can include reviewing and compiling financial transactions and data, performing audits, checking and recording taxes, and financial forecasting.

Civil Engineer

Civil engineers have the job of designing, planning, and overseeing the construction of roadways, railways, and airports, among other things. Civil engineers can go on to work in urban planning for the city or state.

Civil engineers need to have excellent problem-solving skills as well as the ability to look at the big picture. They also need to be conscientious since so many rides on their city planning.

Psychologist

Psychologists help patients deal with their trauma, mental health challenges, and behavior. A psychologist can derive a great deal of job satisfaction from helping people.

The field is not without challenges, though. Psychologists listen to a lot of highly emotional accounts on a daily basis and so need to be mentally strong. Many psychologists have a master’s degree as well as a Ph.D. in psychology or related fields.

Doctor

Medicine is one of the most in-demand and respected fields. You need to be willing to work and study really hard, with exceptional scores in your studies. Becoming a doctor can be stressful but also an immensely rewarding job. There can be long hours, and it takes years to become fully qualified.

You can choose from a number of specializations including obstetrics. You also need to be mentally strong for this field, along with having an aptitude for science, biology, anatomy, etc.

Dentist

Dentist jobs are in great demand. Dentists need to attend dental school for several years, following a bachelor’s degree. They must display characteristics such as attention to detail, precision, and the ability to work well under pressure.

Dentists also need to be patient and discerning. Dentists can expect a good income and might find it a little bit easier to have a good work-life balance as compared to a GP doctor or surgeon.

Data Analyst

Becoming a data analyst is a great way of entering a tech career. A data analyst tries to glean important insights by reviewing data. You need strong analytical skills and the ability to spot patterns to become a data analyst.

You should also have an aptitude for studying a lot of data without feeling overwhelmed. Finally, a data analyst should be good at interpreting the data and using the insight to help the business to better.

Mathematician

A mathematician seeks to understand and develop mathematical principles that often have a huge real-life impact. Mathematicians can start with a bachelor’s degree in maths and move on to a higher degree of specialization. Mathematicians analyze and review data and apply mathematical solutions to real-world business or government problems.

Software Engineer

Software engineers need to write and test code, and analyze user requirements, among other things. Software engineering and programming is one of the most in-demand tech fields. You’ll need a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in IT, software programming or computer science. Programmers and software engineers are paid very well and often go on to build their own small businesses or tech start-ups.

Statistician

A statistician needs to have a great aptitude for problem-solving, numbers, maths, and analysis. You must also have a master’s degree or Ph.D. in statistics. Statisticians need to be able to quickly understand the big picture and be able to forecast accurately business and other model-based trends.

A statistician can be invaluable to governments and corporations due to their ability to make accurate predictions based on past and present data.
